Manchester City crash out of the Champions League after a thrilling semi-final clash with Real Madrid

Pep Guardiola's side suffer a 4-3 penalty shoot-out exit after the sides had played out a pulsating 3-3 draw over 120 minutes

Manchester City's hopes of retaining the Champions League were dashed in dramatic fashion as they suffered a 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat to Real Madrid in Tuesday's semi-final second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

After a pulsating 90 minutes had ended 2-1 to City, with Riyad Mahrez's strike cancelling out Rodrygo's opener and Karim Benzema restoring Real's lead, the tie went to extra-time and remained finely poised.

The visitors were then awarded a controversial penalty in the dying moments of extra-time, with Aymeric Laporte deemed to have fouled Benzema inside the area. However, Mahrez stepped up to coolly convert from the spot and send the tie to penalties.

In the shoot-out, it was Real who held their nerve, with Andriy Lunin saving two penalties to send the Spanish giants through to the final. Ruben Dias, Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez all saw their spot-kicks saved by Lunin, while Karim Benzema, Rodrygo, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos all converted their penalties for Real Madrid. The result means that City's wait for a first Champions League title goes on, while Real Madrid will now face Liverpool in the final in Paris on May 28.
